Mexico’s Marcelo Ebrard Proposes 50% Tariff Hike on Chinese Cars to Boost Local Industry

Mexico, under Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard and President Claudia Sheinbaum, has unveiled a plan to sharply increase tariffs on cars imported from countries without free trade agreements, notably China.

The proposal would raise duties on Chinese cars from 20% to 50%, aiming to protect domestic automakers and preserve local jobs. Officials say this overhaul is necessary to counter rising imports that threaten the competitiveness of Mexico’s auto sector.

China responded critically, calling the measure protectionist and cautioning that it could undermine investor confidence. The changes would also extend to other products from non-FTA nations, signaling Mexico’s broader goal to reset trade terms.

The move reflects mounting global trade tensions as countries strive to shield key industries from low-cost competition.
